In the above photo we were visiting the Golden Pavilion, Rokuon-ji temple, in Kyoto, one of three amazing world heritage sites that we visited on Sunday. This is a reconstrunction of the first pavillion which a shogun built starting in 1397 after abdicating his position and 'indulging in a peaceful life'. That's real gold. The first building 'came to ruin' when a trainee monk so enraptured with the shrine burnt it down, thinking that way he could keep it to himself. The grounds were very crowded but so beautiful, somehow the evening light, and smell of pine trees still made it feel a very peaceful place, and it was easy to picture yourself there wandering the paths alone.
