The rock garden in Kyoto we visited on Sunday was under going some repairs to the wall, so I have borrowed a photo from a brochure. ( I seem to have returned home with mountains of brochures ) Monks rake the gravel in the early morning as a form of meditation. There are 15 rocks in the garden, but when seated you can only see 14 rocks at one time, no matter where you sit. In Buddhism 15 is a perfect number, so only being able to see 14 reminds us of our imperfections as humans.
