In Japan women give gifts to men on Valentines Day and then one month later, March 14th, men are to return the favor on what is known as White Day. I don't know how this came about, there is some speculation that the whole White Day thing was invented by a marshmallow maker. I do know people seem to think it odd for women to expect gifts on Valentines Day. Regardless, seemingly unable to learn from the past, expect I did and thus was left disappointed when, on Valentines Day, O conveniently embraced Japanese tradition and I was left, shall we say.. wanting ? Fortunately for O 'White Day' gave him an out, and I was promised fine things. Well yesterday was White Day, actually it didn't occur to me till I saw loads of men lining up outside our friendly neighborhood cream puff shop and suddenly it took powerful restraint not remind O of the promises he had made. So glad I didn't - true to his word - and without a trace of coercion on my part, I received a beautiful bunch of lilies and a huge box of truffles. oh happy day !
