still happyWhat can one say about a beach holiday ? There is very little to do there which is exactly why it appealed. We took dips in the pool and walks in the shade drank margaritas at sunset while Marlena ate sand. It is a funny little island though, 5 by 14 miles, and one with a sad World War II history - in less then a month in 1944 fierce fighting on this tiny island alone left 3500 Americans, 30,000 Japanese and 400 Saipanese dead. Remnants of the war can be seen everywhere, along side distinctly no frills massage parlors and poker joints that now serve the abundant US military presence and yet there we all were just 60 some years later Japanese, Americans, Chinese, Korean & Russians splashing about and grinning like fools.
