farm life !

After the big storm on Saturday - the skies were bright and clear on Sunday morning. We had an unusually early start so even though we knew it was going to be a hot one we headed to what must be the farthest Western point of Singapore for breakfast and a wander at a place called Poison Ivy Bistro at the Bollywood Veggies organic farm. We had tried to find it once before and ended up at the wetland reserve, which we thought was far out, but this is even further down the road. Something I had read ages ago had me a little intimidated - looking at the website I can't imagine what it was. Maybe I just feared my brood too wasteful. It is really sweet, and visitor friendly. In fact a busload of bemused Chinese tourist got dumped off there which did kind of destroy the illusion - but I guess it's cool they are learning about organic farming. M in particular enjoyed wandering the farm - which is more like a big useful garden. There were yams, and herbs. Citronella plants and lots and lots of bananas. There was a lady with a little stall at the front that kept giving the kids bananas, and they were so delicious. Really different from store bought. We brought some banana bread from her (and a book she had written about growing up impoverished in Singapore with cerebral palsy - very interesting). It was such a treat to feel like we were properly in the countryside. To listen to the sounds of birds and insects- when the kids weren't wailing. Cause the insects were biting and it did get very hot. By 11 am it was time to go home.
