The Daibutsu-den, Hall of the Great Buddha, the largest wooden structure in the world, was all dressed up for a special ceremony. Under fluttering banners monks sat chanting in ornate robes. After a little research the only mention of October ceremonies I can find, is the Deer Antler Cutting ceremony on the second Sunday of October, which just about fits. The Daibutsu is situated in an immense park of deer - sacred, if not a little stinky and aggressive, messengers of the Gods.
