a garden of ones own

Much catching up to do on our trip to the mountains. When planning our trip my mother and I agreed we were not really up for sight seeing but just wanted to go to smaller towns and soak up some atmosphere. So we decided to visit two small mountain towns, Takayama and Gujo no Hachiman. Somewhere along the line we also rather casually decided we wanted to stay in Ryokans - a distinctly Japanese style of lodging. In hindsight I don't quite think we knew what we were getting ourselves into, and just how much staying in a Ryokan would shape our experience. Perhaps Ryokans (the good ones! ) are actually just that - all about shaping your experience - gently shifting your pace and your focus to something slower and more deliberate. As we relaxed in Yukata (well as much as Marlena, delighted to find everything just at her height, would let us relax) a lot of this shifting was accomplished through food and extraordinary service. Both of which we probably can and just may go on about at some length.
